abc's tahman bradley has the latest. >> reporter: the record powerball jackpot has two winning tickets. powerball officials announced overnight, the tickets were sold in missouri and arizona. the prize, close to $580 million. the biggest in powerball history. here are the numbers. the powerball, 6. before the drawing, dreams were big. >> the best thing in the world. nobody in my family would have to worry about anything ever again. >> reporter: millions of americans lining up, buying tickets. in the hours before the drawing, tickets were sold at a rate of 130,000 every minute. >> this is amazing. incredible. never before happened here. >> reporter: at one indiana store, tickets were given away. 500 of them gone in an hour. >> free powerball tickets. >> reporter: people like chris shirley drove hours to play. >> the signs. it just pokes out at you. you just have to give it a shot.

>> reporter: and you did? >> yes, i did. >> reporter: lots of people gave it a shot in massachusetts. like here at a gas station, where 70% of the business is lottery tickets. owner tony amiko says over the year, he has sold 20 grand prizes, totalling $110 million. >> the secret is, you have to buy a ticket to win. that's the secret. if you don't buy anything, you're not going to win. >> reporter: buy more tickets. all right. an additional 8.9 million people won smaller prizes. but all eyes on missouri and arizona, as we wait this morning to learn more about the jackpot winners. rob and paula? >> let's break this whole thing down and make most folks extremely jealous right now. the two winners, how much are they going to get? >> reporter: let's first of all talk about the lesser prize winner, the nearly 9 million of them. they're going to split $131.5 million. but the jackpot winners are

blames paula broadwell for the affair. he says broadwell was a savvy woman who knew a lot more about matters of the heart. with the fiscal cliff looming in just over a month, high-level negotiators meet today on capitol hill. one republican is suggesting that instead of risking a tax increase on everyone, it would be better to let tax increases for the top 2% of earners go up. but the top gop leader in the house says that's a no-go. >> the goal here is to control the economy and control spending. you're not going to grow the economy if you raise tax rates on the top two rates. it will hurt small businesses. it will hurt our economy. why? this is not the right approach. >> reporter: boehner and president obama said they are optimistic that a deal can be reached by christmas. turning overseas to egypt, where opponents of president mohamed morsi are calling for a second revolution. morsi is addressing his people today. a speech in which he's expected to discuss his move last week to

seize near absolute power. thousands have been on the streets of cairo protesting that move since. morsi is showing no signs, though, of backing down. and with the conflict in syria showing no signs of ending, the obama administration is reportedly considering deeper intervention there. this morning's "new york times" says no decisions have been made. but several options are being looked at, including providing arms to anti-government fighters. a decision on whether to deploy surface-to-air missiles in neighboring areas is likely next week. and a major milestone is expected at the u.n. today, when the general assembly votes to give statehood to the palestinians. this comes despite strong opposition for u.s. officials over fears that such a move could harm peace negotiations with israel. palestinian leaders view the vote as a step towards global recognition. and it turns out, mitt romney is going to the white house after all. the former republican candidate is meeting president obama for lunch in the private dining

and welcome back, everyone. three former bp workers are free this morning after being arraigned on manslaughter charger, stemming from the deepwater horizon oil rig explosion. they pleaded not guilty yesterday in new orleans and were released on bond. the men are accused of disregarding high pressure readings just before the blast that killed 11 workers in april of 2010. and there is encouraging news in the fed's latest snapshot of the economy. the report known as the beige book, shows steady economic growth in recent weeks, led by consumer spending and home sales, as well. the economy expanded in 9 of the 12 fed regions. but new york, philadelphia and boston saw a slowdown largely because of hurricane sandy. no surprise there. and there's no slowdown in what americans are spending on gas, though. drivers are on pace to spend a

record amount at the pump this year. $483 billion or $1.32 billion a day, with gas prices consistently high during the past year. but in a bright spot, though, looking ahead to 2013, the energy department predicts gas will average about $3.44 a gallon. that's about 20 cents lower than this year. and what about the cars and trucks that need filling up? the l.a. auto show opens tomorrow, with vehicles from the ordinary to the out of this world. toyota is getting early buzz with its first redesign of the rav-4 suv in seven years. featuring an intelligent all-wheel drive system. also getting attention, right there. volkswagen's new beetle convertible. and starbucks is rolling out a new coffee. and if the caffeine doesn't jolt you, the price certainly will. it is the chain's most expensive coffee ever. the costa rica will set you back

6. better luck next time to almost nearly everybody this morning. and there was some tense moments for passengers at the milwaukee airport after a live shotgun shell was found aboard a plane there. all of the passengers on that delta flight to detroit had to deplane and then go through security again. now, investigators want to know how the shell made its way on that plane in the first place. a georgia couple who found out about their daughter's death on facebook is now trying to use the social network to solve her murder. 17-year-old jasmine benjamin was a college freshman. she was found dead last week in a campus study area. but before her parents were notified by police, a family friend sent them a post about her death, which police are investigating as a murder. benjamin's parents have set up a facebook page, hoping that students will offer clues about her death. and rescue crews trying to reach a climber on mt. hood say
